The Cellar

I have a new favourite restaurant in Halifax. It's called The Cellar. My sister and her best friend are in town for the weekend, and as a thank you to the hubby and I for having them to stay they took us out for dinner (which was very very nice of them...I hope the futon is comfortable!). I hadn't been to The Cellar before, but I've heard great things about it, and we decided to check it out. We were not disappointed!
We started with Indonesian satay pork and tomato calamari. Just before the calamari arrived at our table, we had a whole conversation about how hard it is to find good calamari anymore. Most of it is rubbery and tough. Well, this was the most tender, delicious calamari any of us had ever had, and the satay was equally delicious. Great start to a great meal! (Sis' friend wants to order take-out calamari before she leaves and smuggle it on the plane home...we'll see how that goes!)
We all ordered something different for entrees, and they were all fantastic. My clam & artichoke pizza was TO DIE FOR...garlicky, crisp, just insanely good. My sister's mushroom & asiago pizza was also incredible, and the hubby's salmon and M's chicken were lovely too. All of us raved about our individual dinners, and we all raved about our taste-tests off of each other's plates too.
Of course, by that point we were stuffed, but we had to go on to dessert just to finish off the experience. Plain old vanilla ice cream & butterscotch sauce...amazing. And the hubby actually was full for once (he is an absolute bottomless pit- it is a feat to get him full.) I haven't had a dinner that good in a setting that nice in quite a long time. Normally you hit a high note on one of two courses, but this one scored tens on all three. And we were lucky enough to get a table right by the fireplace, which was lovely.
So, for all of you Haligonians, thank you for telling me about The Cellar, and if you haven't been, go. Your taste buds will thank you (as will you wallet...Halifax prices are so much more reasonable than Toronto!)
